What makes South American wines so special?

Wines from the so-called “New World”, from countries such as Argentina, Chile or Uruguay, have been arousing enormous interest among consumers and wine connoisseurs around the world for decades.

What distinguishes these wines from wines from other regions of the world?

Argentina, for example, the world’s 5th largest wine producer after Italy, France, Spain and the United States, is marked by the altitude of its main wine regions. This country, which is 3800 km long, has several low-lying regions, but most of its wine production is located at the foot of the Andes Mountains.

The Northwest of this country, with provinces such as Salta, Catamarca and Jujuy, has vineyards that can reach 3300 meters above sea level. The Cuyo region, with provinces such as La Rioja, San Juan and the world-renowned Mendoza, has vineyards ranging between 450 and 2000 meters above sea level.

The presence of the mountain range not only allows us to observe incredibly unique landscapes, but also to stop the cold and humid winds from the Pacific Ocean and transform them into softer and warmer winds. This also gives a unique purity to the air that flows through the vineyards.
As the temperature drops by 1 degree for every 100 meters of altitude, this means that altitude is also a decisive factor in the microclimate of a vineyard. Similarly, a higher altitude vineyard increases its exposure to the sun, which causes the skins of the grapes to thicken, giving the wines more color and tannins.
Altitude also allows for optimal thermal amplitude (i.e., the difference in temperature between day and night). This is a very desirable factor for winemakers, as it allows the grapes to be exposed to greater radiation and temperature during the day and to rest at night. This results in higher acidity in the fruit and a greater concentration of aromas.

Among the most outstanding varieties among the wines produced in Argentina, Malbec is undoubtedly at the top of the podium. Just as Riesling is the identity of German white wines par excellence, Malbec is the identity of Argentine red wines. It is the grape on which the wine industry of a country was built. We will also find excellent exponents of Cabernet Sauvignon, Bonarda, Tannat, Merlot, Syrah and Pinot Noir wines.
Among the Argentine white wines we find a unique grape in the world: Torrontés, followed by Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Semillón, among others.
This country also has very interesting blends, which have been gaining recognition thanks to important winemakers who always seek to go beyond the established limits, both when blending varietals and making the final blend.

Chile is a paradise for wine production thanks to its high summer temperatures and cold, rainy winters. In addition, the Andes Mountains provide irrigation through snowmelt and a natural barrier against pests and diseases.
This country has some of the best terroirs in the world, with vineyards from the edge of the Atacama Desert to the south of Biobío, showing a great diversity of soil types and climates to produce a wide range of wines.
While Chile has 17 valleys, divided into 6 main regions, its vibrant viticulture has historically been concentrated in the Central Valley, a long strip of land enclosed by the Andes to the east and the Coastal Range to the west, which encapsulates this “Entre Cordilleras” zone. This region offers a multitude of terroirs defined by a Mediterranean climate, high solar radiation, sedimentary soils and cool nights, all of which promote very healthy viticulture and the development of deep red wines with character.
Among the Chilean grape varieties we can enjoy wines made with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, Carmenère, Cinsault, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Syrah.
As for white grape varieties, we can find in Chile excellent Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon and Viognier wines.

And Uruguay? Uruguay is a pearl of the River Plate, whose wines are gradually gaining worldwide recognition. Uruguay has 6 well-defined wine regions: Litoral Norte, Litoral Sur, Metropolitana, Centro, Oceánica and Norte. Canelones, Maldonado and Colonia are some of the areas with the highest production. The southern region is where 90% of the country’s vineyards are located.
Among the most widely planted red grape varieties in Uruguay is Tannat (which is its flagship variety). The clay soils, together with the Atlantic breeze, offer exceptional conditions for this variety. Uruguay is today the main producer of Tannat, with production volumes that even exceed those of its place of origin. Tannat wine expresses itself perfectly on its own, but also presents combinations of particular characteristics, in blends with other varieties.
But Uruguay is not only Tannat. We also find Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Marselan, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Pinot Noir.
Among the white grape varieties, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Viognier and Moscatel, among others, stand out.

In all these countries there are regulations that, particularly in each one, have allowed over the years the creation of geographical indications and appellations of origin. Always respecting local regulations regarding the combination of grape varieties and terroirs, the inventiveness of winegrowers and winemakers in the elaboration of Blends and Cuvees, both red and white, and sparkling and rosé wines, is always outstanding.

In Andenweine it is possible to choose from over 240 wines from more than 40 wineries from Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, in a wide range of prices, grape varieties and flavors. Behind each label, there is a story. We invite you to discover it.
